Ndidi Mason

Ndidi is a marine scientist and currently works in operations at a non-profit in Washington, DC. As Evaluation and Feedback Chair, Ndidi collects feedback and uses it to improve the next conference. She joined BWEEMS to connect with like-minded women in the STEM field and is excited to see how people interact and enjoy the conference!

Q: Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in EEMS?

A: My middle school science teacher inspired me to pursue a career in EEMS. He always encouraged me to strive for the best and become a marine biologist. I always had a passion and urge to be by the ocean, especially vacationing at Assateague Island with my family during the summers. As I got to high school, with my family and teachers' encouragement, I went straight into college pursuing my dream.

Q: How do your identities shape your approach to your work and involvement in the scientific community? What does being a Black woman in EEMS mean to you?

A: As a Black woman, I strive to be involved in everything that I know will help me and make an impact in my community. Growing up, I didn’t see a lot of women in my field who looked like me so in everything I do, I always think about the next generation.

Q: How do you balance being a scientist with the rest of your life?

A: I feel like I don’t stop being a scientist because I’m constantly analyzing the smallest things like one. So the balance is knowing when to not overwhelm myself or overanalyze too much.

Q: What is your dream job?

A: A coral ecologist and educator!

Q: What are your favorite things to do in your free time?

A: SCUBA dive, travel, and anything adventurous.

Q: What advice would you give young Black gender minorities interested in EEMS?

A: Whatever you put your mind to, you can do! No matter the adversities and tribulations. There will be doubt and constant overthinking, but you can and will get over that to be the best person and scientist you can be.

Q: What’s your favorite place in nature and why?

A: The ocean! Because I feel at home and at peace.

Q: Share your favorite BWEEMS memory!

A: The Valentine’s Day vision board party in DC!
